What is a QIF file?

QIF (Quicken Interchange Format) is a simple, plain-text format for importing transactions into personal finance software. It predates OFX and is still supported by GnuCash and a number of budgeting tools, even though newer Quicken versions have largely moved to OFX. If your PDF statement is the only record you have of older transactions, this tool converts it straight into an importable QIF file.

How it works

  1. Upload your statement PDF

Drag and drop the PDF bank statement.

  2. QIF is pre-selected

Dates, descriptions, and amounts are detected automatically.

  3. Preview the transactions

Confirm the extracted rows look correct before downloading.

  4. Import into your finance app

In GnuCash, use File → Import → Import QIF and select the downloaded file.

Why use this converter

Universally readable format

QIF is plain text, so it's supported by more legacy and open-source finance tools than OFX.

Debit/credit aware

Handles statements with a single signed amount column or separate debit/credit columns.

No bank connection

A one-time file conversion — never connects to your bank or asks for credentials.

Also exports OFX, CSV & Excel

Switch formats instantly from the same upload.

Importing your QIF file

In GnuCash: File → Import → Import QIF, then select the file and match it to the right account during the import wizard. Other QIF-compatible apps follow a similar pattern. If your software prefers OFX instead, use our bank statement to OFX converter on the same PDF.

Not a bank connection

This tool only converts a PDF you already downloaded. It never asks for your online banking username or password, and never connects to your bank on your behalf.

Frequently asked questions

What software uses QIF files?

GnuCash, older versions of Quicken, and several other budgeting and accounting tools accept QIF imports.

How do I import a QIF file into GnuCash?

Go to File → Import → Import QIF, select the downloaded file, then follow the wizard to match it to an account.

What's the difference between QIF and OFX?

Both describe a list of transactions for import, but OFX is a more structured, modern format, while QIF is an older plain-text format still supported by some open-source and legacy tools. Try our OFX converter if your software prefers that instead.
